This month, we spoke with the new Director of IRS SPEC, Tracey Walker-Carter! As the head of IRS SPEC, Tracey manages the entirety of the VITA/TCE program at the IRS-level. She wanted to share a few words on what to expect for this filing season and her own personal VITA origin story. Can you believe that the filing season is right around the corner?
We're extremely excited to have Tracey take up her new post as the head of the IRS SPEC organization!
Tell us about your VITA origin story?
My VITA story began at the early age of nine. My mother was a long time VITA volunteer and prepared returns on the weekends at the Dallas Urban League. I served as the greeter and kept track of who was next. I have super clipboard skills!
What are you most looking forward to in your new role as SPEC Director?
I am looking forward to getting into the field and meeting with the partners, volunteers and our employees to discover new and innovative ideas that we can expand our reach into the communities.
What is something VITA practitioners can expect from SPEC this filing season?
Practitioners can expect continued support as many partners restart service after closing due to COVID-19.
How do you prepare for the VITA season normally?
I look at the prior season for opportunities to improve the VITA experience for the volunteers and VITA clients. Also, I incorporate the feedback received by partners and volunteers to enhance the VITA experience.
What is one piece of advice for the VITA field going into this season?
My advice would be to continue to be flexible.
