Judge Dismisses FDCPA Suit Seeking Millions in Damages, Suspension of Lawyers’ Licenses
- A District Court judge in Arizona has granted a motion to dismiss filed by the defendants in a Fair Debt Collection Practices Act case, ruling that the plaintiff already had one kick at the can in a nearly identical lawsuit against the defendants and thus can’t be allowed a second kick.

R.I. Legislature Passes Medical Debt Credit Reporting Prohibition Bill
- Both chambers of the Rhode Island legislature have passed a bill that would prohibit credit reporting of medical debts as a means of protecting residents from the adverse credit impacts of medical debt. The bills, sponsored by Rep. Mary Ann Shallcross Smith and Sen. Melissa A. Murray, also set strict rules for communication with consumers, bans false and misleading representations by debt collectors, and prohibits collection activities during insurance appeals.

Ambulance Fees Send Those Needing Care to Other Sources: Poll
- While nearly half of consumers have been transported by an ambulance at some point in their lives, more individuals are forgoing taking rides in them because they can’t afford the costs, according to the results of a recent poll. Nearly one-quarter of those who participated in the poll who needed immediate transportation to a hospital chose not to call for an ambulance because of how much the ride would cost. Instead, most of those people opted to get a ride to the hospital from a friend. One-fifth of those people chose to drive themselves.
