Inspire Your Startup Employees to Stay Engaged

Growing a new company isn't for the faint at heart. Employees must be passionate, willing to go the extra mile, and work long hours as part of a cycle of endless expectations. With so many American employees complaining of burnout and "quiet quitting," startups are facing the same struggles as enterprise companies.

Use these tips to inspire your startup employees to stay engaged.

Work Collaboratively

Silos are common in larger workplaces as a result of business growth. "Wearing many hats" in startups actually encourages employees to be a part of many different aspects of the company. It's true that some employees could feel burnt out by tackling too many duties, however, working in collaboration with others is helpful for relieving stress and building relationships.

Encourage Everyone to Speak Up

When employees understand the mission and goal of the organization, they're likely to have fresh ideas to bring to the table. Encourage brainstorming in company meetings. By listening and even implementing some of these ideas, employees feel like their contributions matter.

Talk About the Future - Theirs and The Business

It's one thing to talk about the future of the business. To really inspire employee engagement, promote discussion around their future.  The employee may seek to fill in a gap that's missing in the growing business. If their career trajectory aligns with the business growth, they're more likely to retain employment with the startup.

Understand Why They're Disengaged

Employees may be disengaged for a variety of reasons. Perhaps they need more time off or flexibility to work remotely. Maybe they don't agree with where the leadership wants the company to go. Maybe they want to feel like their work matters more than just a paycheck. When it really comes down to it, the only way to inspire employees to re-engage or stay engaged is to understand where the problems begin. Survey employees or, if the company is really small, set up some one-on-one time to figure out how to help. If there's one thing that is invaluable to any size organization, it's employees who love where they work and want to help grow their company to success.
