CFPB GOES AFTER SCAMMER WHO TOOK MONEY FRON CONSUMERS SCAMMED BY SOMEONE ELSE
- If you are going to scam consumers, why go to the hassle of trying to find new ones? Why not just scam people who have already been scammed? That appears to be what Frank Gebase did, and it resulted in a lawsuit being filed against him and the company he operated by the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau, who accused him of withdrawing hundreds of thousands of dollars from the bank accounts of individuals who had already been victimized by another student loan debt relief scammer.
CFPB OPENS INQUIRY INTO EMPLOYER-DRIVEN DEBT
- The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau yesterday announced it has opened an inquiry and is soliciting information from the public regarding debts that are owed by employees to their employers, often through requirements that employees pay for equipment, training, or other supplies.
25% OF CONSUMERS IMPACTED BY ID THEFT IN 2021: REPORT
- One-quarter of Americans were impacted by identity theft in some way in 2021, according to a report that was issued this week. The 25% who were impacted was down slightly from 27% — a record high — that was recorded in 2020, as scammers turned their attention back to consumer financial products from government subsidy programs.
ECONOMIC DATA CONTINUES TO SHOW MORE CONSUMERS STRUGGLING TO MAKE ENDS MEET
- In yet another sign that consumers are struggling financially, the number one reason why online payments declined in April was because of insufficient funds in their accounts, according to a published report. More than one-quarter of consumer payment declines were due to insufficient funds, compared with 18% in March, according to the report.
